So, today I had a brand-spankin-new experience: I made a ‘spirit doll.’
Naturally, your next question is “whaaaaat???”
Let me try to explain:
I was at a staff retreat/workshop day today and we were introduced to an art therapy activity of creating a doll that is meant to represent one’s inner spirit. The idea is that, through the creation process, our inner spirit will organically become reflected in the physical structure of the doll. The purpose of the doll is to be a concrete reminder for us to keep in touch with our inner desires, values, characteristics and hopes – to reduce the disconnection many people feel in their lives between what they do in a day and what their core, inner values truly are. Well… that’s the basic gist of it anyway. If you are interested in a more detailed description of ‘spirit dolls’ click here.
Hmmm… one of the participants in the group called hers a “happy voodoo doll.” I had heard of the ‘spirit doll’ concept before today in previous art therapy workshops, but I have never actually created one with my own hands.
Did I get much from the experience today? I’d like to say that I did, but that would be disingenuous of me. And, when this blog is all about living an authentic life, I gotta be real. So, to be honest, no I didn’t really get much from the experience, other than some relaxing time with colleagues crafting it up. The best part for me was listening to everyone talk, laugh and fret over their creations. One guy had his doll (or “spirit action figure”) dancing and taking song requests from the group.
To answer to the suspense you clearly are feeling, no my doll does not ‘speak’ to my spirit or soul.
But hey, it was something new and I figured I’d tell y’all about it. It’s a long shot, but I’m guessing that ‘spirit dolls’ are something new to many of you also. So there you go – I shared something new with you.
New-ness all around 😉
