It’s a new month and with that, a whole new exciting (and terrifying) challenge. For the month of February, we have termed our challenge “SUGAR REHAB.” We will spend the next 28 days working on fighting the sugar addiction by cutting out all refined sugar from our diets. So, before we go any further, there a few things I should clarify…
- Sugar is defined in the dictionary as: “a sweet crystalline substance obtained from various plants, esp. sugar cane and sugar beet, consisting essentially of sucrose, and used as a sweetener in food and drink.”
However, what exactly constitutes as sugar becomes extremely complicated. When Kyla and I sat down to decide how to define it for ourselves, we took into account the purpose of this month’s challenge. For us, this is not about weight loss or dieting. Instead, it is about the fact that our society as a whole is eating copious amounts of sugar and this enormous intake of sugar is a direct cause of many health problems the western world is facing today, including diabetes and heart disease. We also felt part of this journey was about taking back control over what is in our food. Sugar is “hidden” in many products we eat, and this challenge will force us to investigate exactly what we are ingesting throughout day.
Therefore, for the purposes of this month’s challenge, we are going to be cutting all types of sugar that is added to food (either from the manufacturing process or from our own spoons!) including white sugar, raw sugar, corn syrup (high fructose and otherwise), barley malt, beet sugar, brown sugar, cane sugar, caramel, dextrose, fructose, glucose, malt syrup, maltodextrin, and sucrose and perhaps a few more… as you can see, sugar goes by many names.
- This month, we are also going to discuss the use of sugar alternatives (such as honey, maple syrup, agave, stevia, sucralose and aspartame) and how these may or may not fit in to a healthy diet.
- We realize that Valentines day falls in February (oh God)! This is not going to be an easy month for us – and that is the point!! We are ready for the challenge!
- We also realize that February is the only month of the entire year with 28 days! That is intentional – we didn’t want it to be too hard – we are only human after all! 😉
You may also have noticed we have a new picture at the top of the blog! As you can see, we decide to use the classic symbol for “NO,” made of Smarties to represent this month’s challenge. Using a children’s candy was purposeful; sugar is poisoning all of us – including our children.
So, how am I feeling about this challenge, you may ask? To be honest, I am naturally worried and steering myself for a month of cutting an addiction that is probably more a part of my life than I even realized. But, on the other hand, coming off the high of last month, I am excited for the opportunity this will provide me. I am looking forward to being “forced” to look at what I am eating and some of my dependencies, square in the face. I welcome this chance to slow down and become more purposeful in this area of my life.
I am also planning to use this month as a launching pad into overall better health. I was so busy de-cluttering in January that I am embarrassed to say, I did not do one workout! But, this month will be different.
Here’s to February – a month with no refined sugar – and better health! Let the rehab begin…
